Manuscript Critique

In the weeks before the Seminar there will again be an opportunity to have your manuscript(s) critiqued by an instructor. The availability of this critique has been a huge help to students. The manuscripts must reach us a minimum of one week before the Seminar, by Friday, February 10, 2012. Manuscripts received after that time can only be critiqued on a case by case basis if the instructor has time. Manuscripts brought to the Seminar cannot be critiqued.

The critique by the instructor will be in written form attached to the manuscript. If you have questions about the critique, sit with the instructor at lunch or seek to meet them between workshops.

The fees for the critique are as follows: Book Proposal (only one) $20.00, Article (only one) $10.00, Devotionals (two maximum) $5.00 each, Poems (three maximum) $5.00 each. The check should be sent to Jon Drury, Redwood Chapel, 19300 Redwood Rd., Castro Valley, CA 94546, and be made out to Redwood Chapel.

Guidelines

Book Proposal

Submit your proposal (one only) typed, double spaced, page numbered, on one side of 8 ½ X 11” paper in 12 pt. Times New Roman. Include your name, email or phone, and put your name and book title at the top of each page. The maximum is 12 pages, double spaced. Include pitch, synopsis, a short bio, your first chapter, and projected length of the manuscript. As you can tell from the above, we cannot accept entire book manuscripts.

Article

Submit your article typed, double spaced, single sided, 8 ½ X 11” double spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Maximum length is 1,200 words. Include your name, email address or phone, article title, and approximate word count on the first page. If you send a hard copy a report cover or folder is not necessary.

Devotional

Submit your devotional(s) typed, double spaced, single sided, 8 ½ X 11” double spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, no longer that 500 words. Include your name, email or phone, devotional title, and approximate word count on the first page.

Submission - Email or hard copy?

Our ability to get your manuscript attached Word file (Word 2003 is easiest for me) to the critiquer is helped if you send it as an attached Word file to jdrury@redwoodchapel.org. Also mail your check separately as indicated above. If mailing your manuscript, mail it to Jon at the address above.

Other Types of Manuscripts

Occasionally attendees desire another type of manuscript be critiqued, e.g. screenplay, or children's book proposal. Contact me by mail with your interest at jdrury@redwoodchapel.org or children's book proposal. We are unable to critique screenplays this year. Contact me, I will tell you if that type of manuscript can be critiqued, and if it can, I will try to find one of our instructors to read it. The fees and guidelines will probably remain the same. You are on your own for meeting with the critiquer during the Seminar, but one opportunity may be at lunch on Saturday, when each instructor will have their own table.

When Will I Get My Critique?

Your critique and your manuscript will be available at a table near the registration area when you register the day of the Seminar. If you have questions about the critique, sit with the instructor or seek to meet them briefly before or after workshops.

Note

All manuscripts are to be double spaced. There will not be an opportunity to critique manuscripts that are brought to the Seminar without following the details of pre-submitting.
